The new expansion to London City Airport will include extra space to build a three storey extended passenger pier to the east of the existing terminal, eight new aircraft stand and extra taxiway space for larger jets.

Firms are bidding for the design and build of piling, substructure and concrete works for the western energy centre, main terminal and terminal extensions.

BAM Nuttall have already been confirmed to deliver a new concrete deck over the water of the Royal Docks in order to expand the current capacity of the airport. Once this is built, then the new passenger pier and aircraft taxiing stations can be built.

US engineering giant Bechtel is the main delivery partner for the project, which is expected to cost around £480m.

London City Airport

Due to the fact that London City Airport is in constant operation, work will take longer than usual and the complete expansion is unlikely to be finished until 2022. However, with the piling and decking underway, the West Terminal extension is to commence later this year, with the eight new stands and the new East Pier all beginning throughout the course of next year.

The last part of the expansion scheme is the East Terminal extension, which will begin in 2019 and will be worked on throughout the course of three years.

Once completed, London City Airport’s capacity will be able to handle far more flights and potentially new partnerships and new routes will spring up, meaning more traffic coming in and out of the Royal Victoria Docks.
